Randomised trial of iodine intake and thyroid status

چکیده
Background—Low levels of circulating thyroid hormones have been associated with poorer general and neurodevelopmental outcome in preterm babies and it has been speculated that the association is causal. Low levels of circulating thyroid hormone have been reported after inadequate intake of iodine in preterm infants being fed milk formula. Aim—To investigate whether increased iodine intake from supplemented preterm formula would improve thyroid hormone levels in preterm babies (this study) and hence improve neurodevelopmental status (planned subsequent study). Method—A total of 121 preterm infants were entered into a randomised controlled trial of standard (68 μg/l) versus increased (272 μg/l) iodine in preterm formula. Results—The two groups were comparable at recruitment. No evidence of an eVect of the intervention on thyroid hormone levels was seen up to 41 weeks after conception. Conclusion—Calls for increased iodine content of preterm infant formulas are not justified by this study. (Arch Dis Child Fetal Neonatal Ed 2000;83:F86–F90)

Randomised controlled trial of one week strict low-iodine diet versus one week non-specified low iodine diet in differentiated thyroid carcinoma
Introduction: A low iodine diet (LID) is recommended prior to the Radioactive Iodine-131 (RAI) treatment or scanning in differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) post total thyroidectomy. However, recommended strictness of LID is varying among major guidelines. This study was aim to investigate the patient’s compliance to LID by measuring the urinary iodine level post LID. <...

OBJECTIVE To study the effect of salt reduction on iodine status and to determine whether iodine consumption was still adequate after salt reduction in a population where universal salt iodisation is mandatory. DESIGN A substudy of a cluster randomised controlled trial, with schools randomly assigned to either the intervention or the control group. SETTING 28 primary schools in Changzhi, no...

Although gestational hyperthyroidism is uncommon (0.2%), hypothyroidism (autoimmune disease or suboptimal iodine intake) occurs in 2.5% of women and is predictive of reduced neonatal and child neuropsychological development and maternal obstetric complications. متن کاملThe effect of iodine supplementation in pregnancy on early childhood neurodevelopment and clinical outcomes: results of an aborted randomised placebo-controlled trial.
BACKGROUND Concern that mild iodine deficiency in pregnancy may adversely affect neurodevelopment of offspring has led to recommendations for iodine supplementation in the absence of evidence from randomised controlled trials. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the effect of iodine supplementation during pregnancy on childhood neurodevelopment. Secondary outcomes included pre...
